A study published in the Journal Antioxidants identifies the role of glutathione in protecting against severe inflammatory responses triggered by COVID-19. A common similarity in all conditions associated with COVID-19 appears to be an impaired redox imbalance and accumulation of reactive oxygen species. Glutathione is a key antioxidant and plays a fighting role against oxidative stress. Glutathione levels could be critical in reducing the inflammation that triggers organ failure in COVID-19. Further research is needed to identify the possible use of glutathione as an adjunctive treatment to the current treatment modalities in COVID-19 patients.
